Seascapes 1998 – 2000

Periodically I have felt the need to re-calibrate my subject matter. In order to continue exploring the genre of landscape I turned my focus to the sea. Already a well-established genre in the history of painting, this subject matter lead me to further study Romantic painting of the 19th and early 20th Century. I wanted to try and make this genre relevant for today. My desire was to create the feeling of an ocean, as much as it was to create the look of one. To help accomplish this I worked more abstractly, whilst maintaining my representational approach. I want to provide just enough information to the viewer so that they believe the scene that they are looking at.
