Landscapes 1995 – 1999
The compositions that comprise this section were painted over a four to five year period, in which I experimented with techniques such as frottage, abrasion of the canvas surface and thin glazes juxtaposed with thicker impasto paint application. One of my goals in this body of work was to find a way to translate the look and particularly the feeling of an actual abandoned landscape into a pictorial experience. To do this I vigorously worked the surface of some older compositions so that only a ghosted image remained. I then reinterpreted the fragments left behind to create a new landscape composition.
