Landscapes 2012 – 2016
Landscape has been my favourite subject in painting. In this body of work done over a four-year period I used many different documentary war images as a starting point. Of particular interest were photographs of the World War Two battle of Monte Cassino in southern Italy. The landscape and architecture at this site were heavily damaged. More importantly there were appalling casualties on both sides. My paintings are speculative in nature, based on distant documentary accounts. The landscape becomes a symbol of the futility of war.
